"Ujima" means collective work and responsibility and is one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Thus the name of this conference, The Ujima Men's Collective.
The Ujima Men's Collective (UMC) was formed to create a collective of Black men who have sex with men to meet, educate and build a strong network of other Black men in their region or area to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic and other major issues and concerns in their community.
The Ujima Men's Collective comes at a critical time in the HIV/AIDS pandemic as it is plaguing our country-especially our Black brothers and sisters. We believe that if we know more, we will do more to prevent AIDS from ravaging the Black community. The staggering statistics indicate a need to take responsibility for our community and greater ourselves.
We believe that as Black men; we must do as our slogan articulates: "take responsibility for our greater selves." UMC will take responsibility by:
Encourage Black men who have sex with men to be the best men they can be and to strive for greatness in all things they attempt. UMC encourages Black men to make safer sex choices to keep them HIV negative.
Empower Black men who have sex with men to understand and accept who they are and not feel the need to hide or to deny who they are. UMC empowers Black men who have sex with men to make better life choices to keep them negative situations.
Educate Black men who have sex with men to keep themselves safe from HIV/AIDS infection through conferences, workshops and trainings. UMC educates Black men who have sex with men to make safer sex choices to keep them HIV negative.
